Class of 2008
Ed King

While growing up in the Cove Ed learned the game while playing baseball and spending time with his dad. "There were no T-ball, little leagues, teener leagues or other avenues for young players. We played a lot of pick-up games in the fields of Bedford County," recalls Ed. Ed didn t get started playing organized ball until he was in ninth grade.

Ed graduated from Replogle High School in 1954. He went on to get his teaching degree from Shippensburg State College in 1958. Upon graduation, Ed was hired as a teacher and an assistant baseball coach at Northern Bedford County High School. Two years later he was named the head baseball coach.

Baseball has changed much since those early years in Bedford County. "When I became head coach in 1961, a 10 to 12 game schedule was all the games you played. There were no district or state playoff games," explain King.

For the next 40 years, Ed coached the Panthers to an impressive 397-227 record.

A humble King stated," Throughout the years, I was truly blessed to be surrounded by loyal and committed assistant coaches and many good players. I was blessed with the support from the school, the community, and my family."

After high school Eddie continued playing competitively for many years. Ed played in several fast-pitch softball leagues. Bill Creps remember playing many very competitive games against Ed's team in the county's Rural League. "I remember Ed as the pitcher and his fellow teacher-coach left handed Lew Ewart as the catcher. It was always a close game and several times we played them for the league title."

Ed still follows the NB Panthers, the Altoona Curves, the Pirates, Penn State, and the Steelers. He is also quite a bowler in the leagues at the Huntsman Lanes in Martinsburg.

King still resides in the Cove (New Enterprise) with his wife Grace (Snyder). His daughter Katrina and her husband Kevin lives near by in Salemsville.
