John Miller
John was raised in the small rural area of Neffsville where he spent his summer days fishing, hunting, swimming and playing baseball and basketball. It is often said that the best basketball in the area was played outside on the black top courts.
Miller graduated from Hyndman High School in 1967. While at Hyndman he played J.V. and varsity basketball as a freshman and then started his sophomore, junior, and senior seasons. John was tutored and coached by the late Charlie Close and by Bedford County Sports Hall of Famer John Keller.
During his career at Hyndman the team won four Bedford County League Championships (BCL record 38-3) and three District 5 Class C Championships. John also scored 1,102 points. John is recognized by many as one of the best all-around high school players in Bedford County history.
After graduation from Hyndman, John went to Alderson-Broaddus College in Philippi, West Virginia, on a referral from Hyndman grad Larry Price, who was a player there.
John played sparingly as a freshman, but started a few games. Miller started the next three years with the following stats.

John averaged a triple-double his senior year with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. He also set the Alderson-Broaddus Field House single game scoring record with 39 points. He was a W.Va. Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Second-Team All-League player his senior year.
After college he played fast-pitch softball in the Maryland-Pennsylvania Area. He played in the Schellsburg Fast-Pitch League in 1972 and 1973. He was the league All-Star shortstop and league MVP in 1973. John remembers fondly the great games against the likes of Joel Swope, Dan England, Dave Wertz, and many other Schellsburg players.
After the 1973 season John moved to Southern California to play in one of the best fast-pitch leagues, the California Western Softball Congress League. John stated that there his eyes were opened to a new game. It was a game of speed, slapping the ball on the ground, bunting, and great pitching where one run would win a majority of the games.
In 1978 he was the league MVP and the leading hitter. John was the All-Conference second baseman six times.
While in California he played in 15 World (International Softball Congress) and National (Amateur Softball Association) Tournaments with his team finishing second twice.
Presently John is helping with the basketball programs at Hyndman High School. John and his wife Jenne are living in the Hyndman area.
