The undefeated 1945 Bisons Game by Game
By Rob Shontz   Gazette Staff Writer

The success of Bedford s 1945 football team did not come as much of a surprise. The Bisons returned 11 letterwinners from the 1944 team that finished 6-2-1, and had 60 other players practicing. In fact, the Bedford Inquirer reported that "the Bisons will field a team which has not been seen in many a year in Bedford."  Here is a game·by-game summary of one of Bedford s most memorable seasons.

September 7    Bedford 55, Boswell 0
The Bisons season got off to a strong start with Jack Faust scoring five times, including three on receptions from quarterback Bud Fisher from
20, 22 and 23 yards. Fisher also ran one in himself on the first play from scrimmage for 73 yards while Chuck Watters and Veryl Nave added
scores from 32 and 12 yards out. The Bisons defense held strong against the Bears, allowing only two first downs, both against the second team in the third quarter.

September 14   Bedford 13, Somerset 0
Fisher put Bedford on the board early, returning an interception 65 yards for a score. Nave later plunged in from the one, after a 22-yard run
by Fisher. The Bisons had 11 first downs in the game to just seven for the Eagles.

September 21  Bedford 33, Richland 0
The Bisons started early, moving the ball to the Richland 12 after receiving the opening kickoff, before Fisher ran in for the score. Nave added
a second-quarter touchdown and Faust started a running play before lateraling the ball to Watters, who scored with three and a half seconds
remaining in the half. Rose added a pair of second-half touchdowns, while Bedford s second team kept Richland from reaching the end zone.

September 28   Bedford 26, Westmont 0

A then record crowd of 3,000 were on hand at Bison Stadium to see what the Johnstown papers considered the game of the week. Westmont
made the best scoring attempt on Bedford all season, reaching the Bison 12, but were thwarted by an interception by Chuck Watters.  Watters, Faust, Fisher and Nave each scored touchdowns for the Bisons. Earlier in the week Westmont students painted their school initials, UWY, all over Bedford's streets in white paint.

October 6    Bedford 41, Roaring Spring 0
Faust and Watters accounted for 36 of Bedford's points, with Faust scoring four touchdowns, while Watters reached paydirt twice.
The Bisons scored just two touchdowns in the first half, leading to a second half in which the Inquirer termed a "pure slaughter."

October 12   Bedford 37, Claysburg 0
The Bisons scored three times in the second quarter, thanks to two TDs by Watters and a six-yard scamper by Sonny Marshall. Watters scored his third touchdown of the game in the third quarter on a 41-yard run. Fisher and Faust each had runs of over 35 yards in the fourth quarter which resulted in scores.

October 19    Bedford 26, Mercersburg Acad. 0
The Bisons won their seventh consecutive game with a shutout, although most of the first quarter was played in Bedford field
position. Fisher hit Rose for a touchdown pass, and later ran in from the three to give the Bisons a 13-0 halftime lead. Fisher ran for another score in the second half and Faust added a touchdown. Mercersburg struggled against Bedford's defensive line, despite being the bigger team. Bedford's string of shutouts was on the line late, but time expired as Mercersburg had the ball on the Bedford six-inch line.

October 26   Bedford 13, Ferndale 6
Bedford's defense was scored on for the first time all season, but the Bisons overcame a 6-0 halftime deficit for its eighth straight win. Over
1,000 fans made the trek from Bedford to Johnstown's Point Stadium to see what was arguably the most exciting game of the year. Femdale
reached the end zone by driving the length of the field early in the second quarter. Bedford s defense was hurt by penalties and a muddy field,
before Femdale's Gehlman crossed the goal line with less than two minutes remaining. But Bedford rallied back, with Nave and Fisher each
scoring second-half touchdowns.

November 2   Bedford 52, Shade 0
Bedford capped off its Western Conference schedule in impressive fashion, posting its eighth shutout in nine tries. There was no scoring in the  first quarter, but the Bisons put up three touchdowns before the half. Nave ran in from the one, while Fisher threw touchdown passes to Pogue and Rose. The Bisons subbed for much of the second half, but still scored virtually at will.

November 15   Bedford 33, LaSalle (Fort Hill) 0
The Bisons capped off their perfect season with another shutout, this time over a team from Maryland. Bedford carried just a 6-0 lead at
halftime, thanks to a one-yard touchdown by Nave, but erupted for three scores in the third quarter. Fisher, Watters and Rose each scored to put { the game out of reach. Fisher hit Faust on a seven-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.
NOTES: Faust led the team in scoring with 93 points, including 15 touchdowns, while Fisher and Watters scored ten touchdowns each. Nave
scored nine times.

Huntingdon edged Bedford for the Western Conference title and finished sixth in the state, just one-tenth of a point ahead of Bedford.
