The Undefeated 1960 Chestnut Ridge Lions:  Game-by-Game

Prospects for the Chestnut Ridge football team were not high in the late summer of 1960.  The team was coming off a one win season in 1959 and the program had yet to have a winning season in it’s short history. In addition, the team had a new and unproven coaching staff and the smallest squad in the county with only 26 players.  So in late fall, after the Lions had rattled off nine straight victories including wins over highly touted Tussey Mountain and undefeated Everett, many people were surprised of the unexpected success of this team.

Game 1:  Chestnut Ridge 14,  Tussey Mountain 13
In what many considered the biggest upset in Bedford County football history, the Lions knocked off highly touted Tussey Mountain.  This was the first year for the Titans after the merger of Robertsdale and Saxton-Liberty. The Titans lined the field with 75 players compared to 26 players for Ridge. Only the eleven on the field mattered that night as Ridge shocked Tussey. The Lions came back from a 13-0 deficit to knock off the Titans 14-13.

Game 2:  Chestnut Ridge 38, Gallitzin 6
With confidence riding high after the upset win over Tussey, the Lions rolled over Gallitzin 38-6.  Don Corle scored three touchdowns and Woody Acker recovered a fumble in the end zone for another score.

Game 3:  Chestnut Ridge 38, Blacklick 7
For the first time in school history a Chestnut Ridge football team won three games in a row.  This time the victim of the rout was the Blacklick Panthers.  Larry Whysong and Irvin each had a pair of touchdowns on that day.

Game 4:  Chestnut Ridge 6, Northern Bedford 0
In week four Chestnut Ridge traveled to county rival Northern Bedford.  In a hard fought defensive struggle the Lions blocked a punt to set up the only score of the game.  Don Corle scored from three yards in the fourth quarter to set the score.

Game 5:  Chestnut Ridge 48, Lilly-Washington 0
After a four game winning streak, the Lions found themselves traveling over the mountain to Lilly.  The Lions scored early and often in the trouncing.  Don Corle scored three times with 6 extra points.  Irvin Stiffler added a pair of touchdowns.

Game 6:  Chestnut Ridge 27, Everett 0
In what was easily the biggest game in the young programs history, Chestnut Ridge hosted undefeated Everett in the Bedford County football game of the year.  Everett rolled into Fishertown with an impressive string of victories over Bedford, Tussey, Claysburg, Altoona Catholic and most recently a mauling over Somerset 32-6.  Expectations and tensions were high on both sides.  Irvin Stiffler had a huge day for Ridge, scoring twice.  A Hap Miller aerial to Tom Sleek for a score sealed the Warriors fate.  Ridge capitalized on Everett’s mistakes all day and scalped the Warriors 27-0.  This was “THE” signature win of the season and the third straight shutout posted by the Ridge defense.

Game 7:  Chestnut Ridge 33, Meyersdale 13
There was no let down for Ridge after the big win over Everett.  Ridge rolled over the Red Raiders.  Hap Miller threw his eighth and ninth touchdown passes to Larry Whysong, with Irvin Stiffler again adding a pair of touchdowns.

Game 8:  Chestnut Ridge 33, Forbes-Joint 6
Week eight saw Ridge travel to Kanter to take on the Jets.  Ridge once again rolled up the opposition.  Irvin Stiffler once again scored a pair of touchdowns.  Tom Sleek, Don Corle, and Hap Miller also added touchdowns.

Game 9:  Chestnut Ridge 13, Berlin 0
The final week of the season saw Ridge travel to Berlin.  The Ridge fans traveled en masse to see the last game as the game was the largest crowd at Berlin since WW II.  The scrappy Mountaineers kept the game close but Ridge managed to shut out Berlin and win 13-0.  Hap Miller and Irvin Stiffler scored touchdowns for Ridge.
