Krista Jay
When looking at the female basketball players that have come through Bedford County, none have had the success of 1994 Everett graduate Krista Jay.
Jay has been successful in every aspect of basketball including as a scholastic player, a Division I college player, a professional player, a college coach, and scholastic coach.
Jay is one of the most storied and successful athletes to come out of the county. She was a three-time Bedford County League All-Star as well as a two-time second-team all-state performer in volleyball, and in track and field, she was a state qualifier in the discus as a sophomore. As a freshman, she was also a member of the Everett 4x400 relay team that took third in states, which is the highest that any Bedford County relay team has placed at states. It still stands as the school record.
However, basketball is the sport in which she made her name. She is the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,780 points and the girls’ all-time rebounder with 1,052.
Jay had a fabulous senior year in which she led the Lady Warriors in scoring (21.3 points per game), rebounding (14.0 per game), steals (4.0 per game), assists (4.0 assists per game), blocks (2.0 per game), and free throws (81 percent).
She was a four-time Bedford County League and District 5 All-Star, and she was a two-time Altoona Mirror All-Star. Her senior year, she was named to the all-state team as a fourth teamer.
All the scholastic accolades helped earned her a scholarship at George Mason University.
A four-year starter for the Patriots, Jay is imprinted in the George Mason history books in many categories. The 5-10 guard finished her career with 1,400 points, good for seventh all-time. One of the deepest shooters in George Mason history, Jay ended her career third in three-point field goals made with 146. She also finished her career with 144 steals (tied for 13th all-time), 156 assists (20th all-time), and 415 rebounds (24th all-time)
In her four seasons as a Patriot, Mason finished .500 or better each year in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. In her junior and senior seasons, Jay led the team in scoring, averaging 15.0 and 15.8 points per game respectively, and earning second team All-CAA honors each season. Jay earned All-rookie honors from the CAA as a freshman.
In 2009, she was the named as a CAA Women’s Basketball Legend, and she was one of the first seven Patriots to be awarded that honor.
Jay went on to play professionally in Europe in 1998-99 for Alvik 08, a team out of Stockholm, Sweden. She moved on to coaching. She was first as an assistant coach in college at both Longwood University and Duquesne University. She also coached the Fairfax Star AAU team to the 2004 12-and-Under National Championship.
After being an assistant coach at Annandale High School, she is currently working as an assistant coach at Oakton High School, where she’s also an assistant athletic director and teaches physical education. The Lady Cougars have won 10 district titles, four regional titles, and a state title since she joined the Oakton staff. Both Oakton and Annandale are part of the Fairfax County (Va.) Public Schools.
Education has always been a big part of Jay’s life as she has earned her bachelor’s degree at George Mason in Health and Physical Education, a master’s degree in Sports Psychology from California (Pa.), and a master’s degree in Education Leadership from George Mason.
Jay, who currently resides in Fairfax, has also been a part of the Special Olympics, both as a basketball coach and volunteer.
