Terri Beegle
After Title IX was put into place in 1972, one of the first female
athletes from Bedford County to be showcased was Terri Beegle.
Beegle was a 3-sport athlete at Bedford High School as a 2-year
letterwinner in volleyball, a 3-year letterwinner in softball, and a
4-year letterwinner in basketball.
She helped her teams to be winners as the basketball team won 3 District 5 titles, while the softball won 2.
In an era when they only played 11-12 games per year, she was a
prolific scorer for the Lady Bisons.
The Bedford Gazette on March 16, 1976, said “She has scored
over 1,000 points in her career.” Efforts to get the exact number of points have not been successful.
She led the Lady Bisons to 3 PIAA state playoffs but fell in the first game. They lost to Union in 1976, Baldwin in 1974, and to Richland in 1973.
In softball, the Lady Bisons made the state playoffs in 1975, falling to Moon Township.
The success in high school carried over to college, as she was a 2-sport athlete at Lock Haven State College, where she was a health, physical education, recreation, and dance major. She lettered for 3 years in both basketball and softball, and she was the co-captain for both her senior year.
Beegle carried her love for sports beyond college as she went on to be a coach and an official while playing a high level of softball.
She taught for 36.5 years including 3.5 at Tussey Mountain and 33 at Tuscarora School District.
She has been on multiple state championship teams in both ASA and USSA, while being named as the MVP as well as a selection to all-tournaments teams at many of the tournaments.
Beegle has played in 5 World Series and was a member of the team that won the Class B title in Peabody, Massachusetts.
She has coached a state-qualifying tennis team as well as a state medal winner in track and field.
Beegle also coached basketball at Penn State Mont Alto, garnering the CCAC Coach of the Year award twice.
She has coached for 43 years, and had been a PIAA official for 46 years. She is still officiating volleyball.
