Doug Fochtman

Doug was a very busy athlete at Chestnut Ridge High School, lettering in four varsity sports. Doug lettered three years in football. He played both offense and defense at tackle on the only undefeated Ridge football team in 1960. The team won the Bedford County Championship and shared the Inter County Conference Championship with Beaver-Wilmore. He was selected to the Second Team Bedford County All-Star Team.

   Doug lettered four years in wrestling and was captain of the team his senior year, 1960-61. He had a career record of 39-12. He was a District 5 Runner-Up as a freshman and then won three straight District 5 Championships. He was a Northwest Regional 2nd in 1959.

In 1959, he was the Hollidaysburg Tournament Runner-Up and in 1960, he was the tournament champ and also the outstanding wrestler. The 1959 and the 1961 Chestnut Ridge teams won the District 5 Title.

   Doug was a member of the Chestnut Ridge 1961 Bedford County Baseball Championship Team. Also, in 1961, he ran on the Chestnut Ridge District 5 Mile Relay Championship Team. In 1961 Doug was selected Chestnut Ridge Outstanding Athlete.

   In the fall of 1961, Doug enrolled at Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster, PA. While at Stevens he lettered three years in football and was a co-captain in 1963. He also lettered three years in track and field.

   Fochtman's best sport was wrestling and he lettered three years. Stevens was a three year trade school that wrestled mostly Division 1 freshman teams, Penn State, Navy, etc. At that time, freshmen were not allowed to wrestle on Division 1 varsity teams. Doug recalls beating Bloomsburg, who wrestled some of their varsity wrestlers, and that Bloomsburg refused to wrestle them the next year.

   Doug lettered three years with a dual meet record of 25-0-4 and a career record of 35-1-4. During his three years the team record was 25-4 and he was the team captain in 1964. Stevens did not participate in any NCAA post season tournaments at that time.

   In 1962 Doug was undefeated with a record of 17-0. He won the Carlisle Open and the Middle Atlantic A.A.U. Championship. In 1964 Doug was Carlisle Open Runner-Up, losing his only match in his last match at Stevens.

   In 1962 and 1964 Fochtman led the team in scoring. Doug was inducted into the Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.
  
   Doug helped coach at Chestnut Ridge as a volunteer with the junior high and elementary wrestling program for many years. He was president of CRHS Booster Club 1978-1989.

   Doug was a varsity assistant at CRHS under Hall of Fame Coach, Jim Clark, from 1984 to 1989.

   Doug and his wife of 44 years, Nancy, live in the Chestnut Ridge area. They have a daughter and two grandchildren.
