The Undefeated 1972 Everett Football Team

Community to Salute Championship Team
By Tom Hanks - Edited by Bill Creps

Monday, November 20, 1972 was “Warrior Day” in Everett when the community joined in honoring the 1972 Everett High School undefeated football team. A program was held at the high school with Pittsburgh Steelers’ Jack Ham as the speaker. Bill Wilson of WJAC-TV in Johnstown was master of ceremonies

In August, Everett Head Coach Joel Brown brought his troops together for the start of what would be a history-making year. Around Everett, most people thought, or maybe we should say, hoped that this would be the year for Everett. Coach Brown had a good supply of lettermen returning from a team that had a 6-3 record the previous year.

Week 1 - Interest was high as Bedford came to town on a hot, early September Friday night. Both teams were sky high. Everett survived three early fumbles to roll up a 22-0 half time lead. John Fabian was the big story, as time after time, he found holes in the Bison line. The senior ran for over 100 yards. The famed passing duo of Richard Hartle-to-Dennis Clark was right on target leading Everett to a 36-0 lead at the end of the third quarter. Bedford scored on the Everett reserves, but the Warriors won game one, 36-8.

Week 2 - The second week of the season found Everett traveling to Shade. Hartle and Co. put on a dazzling display of offensive power by scoring every time they had the ball in the first half. At intermission it was 42-0 and that’s how it ended.

Week 3 - Berlin traveled to Everett for week three. Everett struck early and often to lead 34-0 at the half. The defense was superb in holding a good Berlin running attack to almost nothing. Final 34-8.

Week 4 - Tussey Mountain’s speedster Craig Enyeart had led the Titans to a 14-6 win over NBC the previous week, but he found Everett’s defense tough to handle. As one observer put it, “Everett just out hit us.” When Everett’s backs hit the line of scrimmage, they would gain three or more extra yards. The final score was 42-8.

Week 5 - Everett traveled to Portage and played in what was the “mud bowl”. Everett scored 30 in the first half. In an oddity, the third and fourth quarters were shortened to eight minutes because of the downpour. Final score was 30-0 in favor of the Warriors.

Week 6 - Everett traveled to Chestnut Ridge with a 5-0 record. Just like “Old Man River”, the Big Red Machine kept rolling along. After a scoreless first quarter, Everett got two TD’s in the second quarter. Hartle passed for over 250 yards in the game. Hartle hit Dennis Clark twice for scores. On a sunny afternoon, Everett shut out Ridge 26-0 for its third shutout of the year.

Week 7 - In the game with Southern Huntingdon, Bill Waltman caught a Richard Hartle screen pass that led to the first six points. Hartle and Clark combined for two TD’s. Hartle was fast approaching a 1,000 yards passing season. Don Miller and John Fabian both had long runs which led to scores. The Rockets were never in it as the Warriors rolled to a 30-0 half time lead and a final of 44-8.

Week 8 - It was called “Super Bowl Saturday” with once-beaten NBC against unbeaten Everett. The game lived up to its billing, a super football game.

Northern scored the first time it had the ball. Aided by a 15-yard penalty, the Panthers drove in with junior fullback Fred Glasgow going into the end zone from the one. The kick was wide. It stayed that way through the remainder of the first, second, and third periods.

Everett got its chance when the Warriors recovered a fumble at midfield. From there the Big Red Machine started to move. There were two key clutch catches by Dennis Clark. The biggest play came on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Hartle to Clark. Hartle somehow found the end zone for 2 point conversion.

There was 10:43 left in the game and the Panthers were not done yet. Later in the final stanza they began to move the ball from their own 29. Aided by a 15-yard penalty and a 37-yard run by Glasgow, Northern was at the Warrior 8-yard line. Three plays later they were on the one. On fourth down, Glasgow went up the middle and he was stopped short, but Everett was off side. With the season on the line again, Glasgow swept wide. This time Hartle met him on the 5-yard line. Northern had one last chance but were stopped by the Warriors. The game lived up to its billing, with Everett winning 8-6.

Everett won its last game 48-2 over Williamsburg for a perfect 9-0 season. That is Everett’s only undefeated football season through the end of the 2015 season.
