Jason Cole
In 1933, Art Amick set the Bedford High School record for the mile at 4:39.0. This record stood for 56 years until a freshman named Jason Cole in 1989 broke the record with a 4:38.0.

As a sophomore, Cole won the District 5 championship in the 800, 1600, and 3200. He advanced to states, but he did not place in any event that year.

In 1991 as a junior, he again won the 800, 1600, and 3200 at the District 5 meet, but this time at states,
he placed third in the 1600 with a school record of 4:24.6.

He exceeded his place and time at the state meet the following year by capturing the state title with a school record time of 4:22.0.

This was the first state champion from Bedford since Ron Hamilton won in wrestling in 1964, 28 years Bedford. It was also the first track and field gold for a Bedford athlete since John “Boots” Clark won two in 1930.

After his freshman year, Cole did not lose a District 5 event, winning four each year, including some relays in his sophomore, junior, and senior years.

Cole’s records in the 800 (1:59.72) and 1600 (4:22.0) still stand today.

After high school, Cole went on to run cross country and track and field at Penn State.

Currently, Cole and his wife Kerri live in the Gettysburg area and have two sons: Gavin, 16, and Drew, 18. Both the sons run track and field and cross country
