Glenn Burket

In November of 1968 a skinny 65-pound seven grade boy showed up for junior high wrestling practice. Little did the coaches, Bill Creps and Terry Black, realize this boy would turn out to be one of the best all-time wrestlers at Bedford High School and Shippensburg University.

The next year Glenn showed that he was going to be a very good wrestler by winning the Junior Olympic District and Area II Tournaments before losing in the All-Area Tournament.

In 1970 Bedford started a junior high team. Glenn made the team at 85-pounds, the first weight class. The first meet was at Spring Cove. In the first match Glenn wrestled Don Acker, who later placed twice at states. The match was scoreless in the third period when Glenn got pinned. This was to be his last dual meet loss at Bedford.

Glenn got beat out in practice, but he continued to make weight for the meets. Four meets later, Burket got his chance when the other wrestler did not make weight. He won the match by a fall and then he won in practice to regain the weight class on the team. Glenn won all four of the remaining dual meets.

As a ninth grader Glenn won the Junior Olympic District and Area II Tournaments and placed second at the All-Area (state) Tournament.

As a sophomore, Glenn made the varsity team coached by Hall of Famer Ed Clark. He had a 15-3 record with two of the losses at the Boiling Springs Tournament and the other in the District 5 Finals. Dual meets record 12-0.

In 1973 as a junior, Glenn won the Boiling Springs Tournament and the District 5 Title. At regionals he lost to Ray Frantz, who went on to become a two time state champion, on a close decision, 8-5. Season record 17-1 and dual meets 11-0 His senior year Glenn again won the Boiling Springs Tournament and the District 5 Championship. He lost in the regional finals after being sick during the week. At states Burket won his first match by fall, before losing to Mike DeAugustino who went on to win three state championships.

Glenn ended the season with a record of 22-2 and 11-0 in dual meets. He did not have a point scored on him in dual meets his senior year. His career record was 54-6 and a career dual meet record 34-0. The 34 dual meet wins without a loss is a school record. Glenn's winning percentage of .897 is third best behind Roger Simons (.932) and Ron Hamilton (.901) among Bedford wrestlers.

Glenn went on to wrestle at Shippensburg University where he set records for wins by a freshman (27 and) for career wins (120-27). He qualified three times for the NCAA Division I Tournament and he placed fifth as a senior earning All-American status. Glenn was the first Division I All-American in any sport at Shippensburg. He is a charter member in the Shippensburg Athletic Hall of Fame. Glenn earned the Shippensburg Outstanding Wrestler Award as a junior and as a senior.

Glenn was an assistant coach under Bill Creps at Bedford for 18 years (1981-1998) with a record of 217-64 and the head coach for three years (1999-2002) with a record of 37-17. Glenn retired from coaching in 2002, but still helps with the Thomas Tournament and the Southwest AA Regional Tournament.

Glenn and Kim, his wife of 25 years, along with their two children, Trey and Lauren, live in Bedford. Trey is a senior in college and Lauren just graduated from Bedford High School. Glenn is the Technology Coordinator for the Bedford Area School District.
