Bedford Basketball 1980

Row 2: Head Coach Royce Waltman, Dave Mitchell, Rob Goodfellow, Marty Hardinger, Dick Mumma, Brian Gilmer, John Anderson, Brian Fisher, Randy Simpson, and Assistant Coach Mike Aikens.
One great recipe for success is the combination of a hall of fame coach with two hall of fame players.
That is what happened with the 1980 Bedford boys’ basketball team. The team was coached by Bedford County Sports Hall of Fame member Royce Waltman, and two of his top players have also been inducted into the local hall of fame: Dick Mumma and Rusty Brown.
That combination helped the Bisons go 24-2 in 1979, and they set the trail for the success of the 1980 team. The Bisons had a great season by going undefeated in the Bedford County League and were the first Bedford basketball team to win a District 6 crown.
The Bedford County League championship was a big accomplishment as the league featured three district championship teams. Aside from Bedford, Chestnut Ridge won the District 5-AA title, while Tussey Mountain won the 5-A championship. It was the fifth straight BCL championship and the 10th BCL title in 11 years for the Bisons. Bedford also earned the Mountain Conference League championship.
The Bisons were 28-2 on the year and the only loss prior to the playoffs came at the Snowball Classic
Tournament at Southern Garrett High School against the host squad, 61-49.
Bedford had their rule through the regular season with only four wins by less than 10 points.
In the District 6-AA playoffs, the Bisons had four close games to win the title. They beat Westmont Hilltop (59-48), Forest Hills (59-52), Marion Center (75-62), and Bishop Guilfoyle (55-45) for the title.
The Bisons drew Greensburg Central Catholic in the first round of the PIAA playoffs, which set up an intriguing match-up between the 6-10 Mumma and GCC’s 6-10 center, Larry O’Neill, who went on to play at Syracuse. The Centurions opened up a 42-22 halftime lead only to have the Bisons cut the lead to six late in the fourth quarter. GCC held on for the 65-55 win on its way to finishing second in the PIAA state tournament.

Mumma was the big gun for the Bisons as he averaged 25.4 points per game in his way to being named to both the AP and UPI All-State First Team. He went on to earn a scholarship and play at Penn State, and he was drafted in the 10th round by the San Diego Clippers of the NBA.
Andy Faust joined Mumma on the first team of the Bedford County League All-Stars and averaged 14.1 points, while Brown, who was a BCL second-team selection, averaged 7.2 points.
They were joined on the court by Rob Goodfellow, Rob May, Randy Simpson, and Dave Grazer. May was a BCL honorable mention selection.
Other team members were: Scott Hardinger, Shawn Davidson, Jeff Davidson, Dave Mitchell, Marty
Hardinger, Brian Gilmer, John Anderson, and Brian Fisher.
