Ron Maslanik

Ronald R. Maslanik graduated from Saxton-Liberty High School in 1958. During his high school years, he was a standout athlete in numerous sports.
In baseball, he was a four-year letterman under coach G.Allen Hoover. He also a two-year letterman in basketball under coach Max Shoenfelt. He was a point guard that averaged 15 points his senior year and was elected to the Bedford County and Huntingdon County all-star teams.
In football, he lettered three years under coach John Lewis. He was a quarterback on offense and a linebacker on defense. He made the Bedford County All-Star Team and was honorable mention on the Pennsylvania All-Star Team and was selected to play in an all-star game at the end of the season.
He earned a football scholarship to Bucknell University, where he played under Bob O’Dell on the 1960 team. That team won the Lambert Cup, which was emblematic of the best Eastern Small School College team. The trophy was presented to the team on television on the Ed Sullivan Show.
During his football career at Bucknell, Ron played both ways as a tight end on offense and a defensive end on defense. He was also the field goal kicker and the extra point kicker, so Ron never left the field during a football game. The Bucknell team was 7-2 that season, which was the best record in 10 years for the school.
His coaches twice voted him as best defensive performance player for the Bisons, and he was a leading candidate for that honor in every game that fall.
Offensively, he caught five passes for 43 yards and one touchdown, intercepted one pass, and scored a total of 19 points with one touchdown, eight conversion kicks, one field goal, and one conversion pass. He finished seventh in the Middle Atlantic Conference in scoring.
Ron transferred to Shippensburg and graduated with a degree in Math Education in 1962. He was hired at Everett High School as a math teacher and assistant football coach, and he later became the head coach for the Warriors. The 1966 team went 7-2 and won the Bedford County football championship as well as the Western Conference Class B championship.
After getting his Masters of Mathematics from the University of South Carolina as well as an administrative certification, Ron was hired in 1970 as an assistant principal at James Buchanan High School and was later appointed as the principal in 1974. He retired in 1998 after 35 years in education.
In the later years, Rob concentrated on golf and won the Great Cove Golf Championship and was the Waynesboro Golf Country Club Senior Champion in 2009. He was also inducted into the Broad Top Oldtimers Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003.
Ron is married to the former Ann McElwee, who was originally from Six Mile Run, and they live in Mercersburg. Together, they have two children, Mark and Tammy.
