The Chestnut Ridge football team of 1966 went 8-1. Game Highlights

•Game 1 – Chestnut Ridge 14, Tussey Mountain 6
o For only the second time in school history, the Lions beat Tussey Mountain behind 364 yards on the ground. Paul Hillegass and Larry Rose each found the end zone for a 14-6 victory. Interceptions by Hillegass and Marlin Cathers helped seal the win.

•Game 2 – Chestnut Ridge 34, Glendale 0
o The Chestnut Ridge offense exploded in its home opener while racking up 411 yards of total offense to lead the Lions over Glendale, 34-0. Larry Rose scored twice, while Larry Benton, Glenn Imler, and Marlin Cathers all added rushing touchdowns. Stan Mock connected with Woody Will for a touchdown pass, while Glenn Imler found Jerry Saylor in the end zone to lead the Lion air attack.

•Game 3 – Chestnut Ridge 34, Boswell 7
o Junior quarterback Stan Mock rambled for three touchdowns on the ground and added another through the air to Larry Rose to aid the Lions over Boswell, 34-7. Senior running back Paul Hillegass added a touchdown and spearheaded the Lions’ rushing attack. The high-powered Lion offense accumulated 342 yards in the victory.

•Game 4 – Chestnut Ridge 45, Northern Bedford 6
o The Lions’ offense was unstoppable as they ran and passed their way to a 45-6 win over Northern Bedford. Larry Rose tallied three touchdowns on the ground, while Stan Mock added three touchdown passes to lead the way. Paul Hillegass, Kerry Cathers, and Woody Will all hauled in touchdown passes.

•Game 5 – Chestnut Ridge 26, Claysburg 19
o A late fourth-quarter 39-yard touchdown pass from Stan Mock to Jerry Snyder allowed the Lions to stay unbeaten with a 26-19 win. Mock also added a touchdown strike to Larry Rose in the first quarter. Larry Rose found the end zone on a 38-yard scamper to round out the Lions’ scoring.

•Game 6 –Everett 7, Chestnut Ridge 6
o The Everett Warriors made a first-quarter touchdown and extra point stand to hand Chestnut Ridge its only loss of the season, 7-6. In a seesaw affair, the Lions and Warriors traded blows back and forth in a defensive clash in front of a crowd of nearly 3,000. Paul Hillegass lead the Lions’ ground attack and Stan Mock provided the Lions’ only touchdown.

•Game 7 – Chestnut Ridge 33, Meyersdale 7
o Using a gigantic fourth-quarter assault, the Lions knocked off Meyersdale, 33-7. Larry Rose scored twice, while Stan Mock added one on the ground. Mock also completed two touchdown passes, one to Jerry Saylor and the other to Paul Hillegass. The Lions’ defense shined bright, holding Meyersdale to only 142 yards of total offense.

•Game 8 – Chestnut Ridge 13, Forbes 7
o Trailing 7-0 at the end of three quarters, the Lions roared with two quick strikes in the fourth quarter to take down Forbes, 13-7. Junior halfback Larry Ickes had both fourth-quarter scores to propel the Lions to victory. Woody Will had a crucial fumble recovery on a botched snap to set up the game-winning score by Ickes.

•Game 9 – Chestnut Ridge 25, Berlin 6
o Senior Paul Hillegass capped off his high school career with a four-touchdown performance to lead the Lions over Berlin, 25-6. Three of Hillegass’ scores came on the ground, and the other on a 24-yard strike from Stan Mock. The Lions finished the season 8-1 and captured the Somerset County Class B Championship.

Game Highlights

•Game 1 –Tussey Mountain 6, Chestnut Ridge 0
o  Despite gaining 279 yards on the ground, the Lions fell to Tussey Mountain in the season opener, 6-0. The Titans forced five turnovers in the ballgame. Marlin
Cathers paced the Lions rushing attack with 119 yards
on 14 carries.

•Game 2 – Chestnut Ridge 34, Glendale 0
o  The Lion backfield exploded, racking up 411 yards on the ground, to capture the Lions’ first win of the season over Glendale, 34-0. On 15 carries, Marlin Cathers led the Lions with 162 yards. Stan Mock added 114 yards. Larry Benton (70 yards) and Larry Rose (46 yards) also picked up yardage with the rushing attack.

•Game 3 – Chestnut Ridge 21, Boswell 0
o  For the second straight week, the Lion defense shined as it posted a shutout in Boswell, 21-0. The Lions’ defense held Boswell to 87 yards of total offense and
forced five turnovers. Stan Mock scored twice as the
Lions’ backfield amassed a combined 291 yards rushing.

•Game 4 – Chestnut Ridge 32, Northern Bedford 6
o  By air and by ground, Chestnut Ridge exploded offensively in the second half against county foe Northern Bedford to secure a 32-6 victory. Larry Rose started the scoring early in the first quarter with a two- yard touchdown. Stan Mock connected with Jerry

Saylor twice through the air for scores, while adding two of his own on the ground to spearhead the Lion attack. The stout Lion defense had another dominant performance, holding the Panthers to just 119 yards of total offense.

•Game 5 – Chestnut Ridge 21, Claysburg 20
o  A touchdown-saving tackle at the two-yard line capped off a thriller in Claysburg. Claysburg’s Jeff Lingenfelter returned a punt from midfield with no
time on the clock all the way to the Lions’ two-yard
line before being knocked out of bounds by Larry Rose to end the ballgame. Stan Mock added a pair of touchdowns on the ground, while Rose added one of his own. Jerry Saylor’s extra point provided the difference, 21-20.

•Game 6 – Chestnut Ridge 45, Everett 0
o  Playing with a lot of emotion, the Lions avenged
a heartbreaking loss in 1966, by defeating Everett,
45-0. The Lions’ offense compiled 348 yards on the ground and added another 50 through the air to pave the way for seven Lion touchdowns. Larry Rose rushed for 122 yards and two touchdowns, Marlin Cathers added 114 yards and a score of
his own to lift the Lions. Stan Mock (three touchdowns) and Larry Benton also found the end
zone for the Lions.

•Game 7 – Chestnut Ridge 18, Meyersdale 6
o  The Lion ground attack dominated again, this time compiling over 300 yards rushing in an 18-6 victory over Meyersdale. Stan Mock found the end zone three times, and the defense stood tall by holding Meyersdale to only 124 yards of total offense.

•Game 8 – Chestnut Ridge 14, Forbes 12
o  The Lions overcame six turnovers and a six-point deficit at the half to take down the Jets, 14-12. The Lions’ defense held the Jets to just 29 yards rushing. Lion signalcaller, Stan Mock, scored twice in the second half.

•Game 9 – Chestnut Ridge 26, Berlin 6
o  Marlin Cathers rambled for 155 yards on 17 carries and added a score to propel the Lions to a 26-6 victory over Berlin. Tom Mickle completed a 15-yard pass to Jerry Saylor for the only passing touchdown of the contest.

•Game 10 – Chestnut Ridge vs Shade
o  The Lions closed out the 1967 season with another offensive assault on the ground to defeat Shade,
34-20. Stan Mock rambled for 132 rushing yards and added 93 through the air to lead the Lions’ attack. Mock found the end zone three times, while Marlin
Cathers and Larry Benton also crossed the goal line. The Lions finished the season 9-1 and captured the Somerset County Class B Championship for the second season in a row.
