The 1966 Everett High School football team welcomed in a new coach with Rob Maslanik taking over the reins.
He led the Warriors to a strong season and did not lose a game until the season finale.
Heading into the season, Everett had 10 returning letterwinners from the previous year, and John Stayer and Lamonte Morris were the team captains.
The Warriors opened up the year against county rival Bedford, with the Warriors pulling out a 14-6 victory.
In the second game, Everett had a 26-0 lead at the half and rolled to a 39-7 win over Shade. Morris scored on a rushing touchdown, and he threw 3 other touchdowns to Eric Smith and Rodney Drenning. Michael Pittman opened the scoring with a 19-yard run.
The only blemish on the opening part of the Warriors’ schedule was a 7-7 tie with Berlin the next week. Everett passed for 141 yards and outgained the Mountaineers, 223-117, but 4 fumbles and an interception hurt the Warriors.
Pittman caught a 28-yard pass from Morris for the only score for Everett.
Everett kept rolling with a strong defensive effort in a 19-0 win over Tussey Mountain. Morris ran a touchdown in himself and connected with Mike Connor for 2 touchdowns in the win. Everett outgained Tussey, 272-147. Patrick Karns ran for 99 yards in the game.
Against Somerset, the Warriors held on for a 14-13 win. The Warriors intercepted the Golden Eagles 4 times in the game and won despite being outgained, 284-198. Connor caught a 3-yard pass from Morris for a 7-0 lead. Somerset scored but missed the extra point. The Warriors added another touchdown on a pass from Morris to Drenning for a 21-yard score. Smith converted both extra points for the Warriors, who held on despite a late score by the Golden Eagles.
The Warriors escaped with a 7-6 win over Chestnut Ridge the next week.
Playing at home against Central, the Warriors had 4 interceptions to help overcome the Scarlet Dragons, 20-7. Morris started the scoring with a 1-yard run for the only score of the first half. Smith
scored in the third quarter on a 56-yard run with Pittman running 43 yards for a touchdown for a 20-0 lead. Everett ran for 204 yards in the game.
After rolling past Northern Bedford, 27-7, the Warriors hosted Williamsburg in the final game of the season. The Blue Pirates ran for 197 yards and had 353 yards of offense in a 27-15 win. Morris
threw a touchdown pass to Pittman for 31 yards, before Mike Connor had a safety for tackling a Blue Pirate in the end zone on an errant snap for a punt. The final score was a Morris pass to Connor for 3
yards that cut the deficit to 20-15, but the Blue Pirates scored late to secure the win.
The Warriors were named Bedford County champions, Inter-County Conference champions, and Western Conference Class-B Champions.
