Harold Price

Harold Price, who went on to distinguish himself as one of this area's premier football coaches, had a strong scholastic playing career himself.

The 1954 Everett graduate earned 10 athletic letters over his career, with four being in baseball and three apiece in football and basketball. Under baseball coach Claude Larimer, Price was a three-year starter.
Larimer was also the basketball coach and Price was a three-year starter and letter winner for the Warriors, including a stint as co-captain for his senior year.

But football was the calling for Price. He was a three-year starter for coach Mike Baker. He played quarterback and running back on offense and outside linebacker on defense. He was the co-captain of his senior team and was a first-team halfback on the All-Bedford County team in 1953.

He set a school record for points, amassing 226 over his career, which was the record for 42 years before being broken by Jamie Eichelberger. That enabled Price to go to Lock Haven State Teachers College and play football under legendary football and wrestling coach Hubert Jack.

He played football all four years and lettered his senior year. That 1957 season also stands out as the only undefeated team in Lock Haven history.

Price also played junior varsity basketball for the Bald Eagles in the 1955-56 season.

Soon after his college graduation, Price was back on the football field as an assistant coach at Hollidaysburg Area Junior High School.

After three years there, he became the head football coach at Williamsburg Community High School, going 25-27-3 over his six seasons, which includes three league championships and an undefeated season in 1964, which includes a playoff win.

In 1967, Price became the head football coach at Windber Area High School until 1971. He was 31-16-3 in five seasons, including a league title.

Price decided to give the college game a try and was an assistant coach at Dickinson College from 1972 to 1975, before moving to the far side of the state at Lehigh University in 1976 and 1977. He helped Lehigh win the NCAA Division II National Championship with a 33-0 win over Jacksonville State at Wichita Falls, Texas.

Price may be best known for his time at Hollidaysburg High School, which is where he went in 1978 and stayed until retiring in 1995.

The Everett native racked up a record of 147-56-2 over the 18 years while amassing 22 championships. His Golden Tiger squads won six District V1 titles, seven Central Counties Conference championships, six Western Conference titles, and one championship each for the Big 8 Conference, CENPAC Conference, and Allegheny Conference.

He had two teams advance to the state quarterfinals in 1989 and 1993, while the 1995 team made it to the state semifinals. The 1989 team was an undefeated squad.

His overall coaching record was 202-99-8.
Price was named the AAA coach of the year in 1985 and was selected to the Pennsylvania State Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1997. One year later, he was inducted into the Central Pennsylvania Football Coaches  Association. In 2000, he made it into the Blair County Hall of Fame and was the 2005 Hollidaysburg Alumni Team of the Year.

Along the way, Price also coached baseball at Williamsburg from 1962 to 1967, at Dickinson from 1973 to 1975, and at Lehigh from 1976 to 1978 as the JV coach.

Price was an avid athlete and also play in several softball leagues in the area. He played fast-pitch for Tecumseh Methodist in the Bedford County League and the Everett All-Stars in the Bedford Independent League, while playing slow-pitch for the Carlisle Merchants in the Carlisle Area League as well as weekend tournaments.

Price also played basketball at the Altoona YMCA.

He is married to Reqina (Riley) Price and they have three children - Ronna Lee, Mike and April Jo. The couple also has seven grandchildren.
