Sue Conner

Susan L. (Duvall) Conner was an Everett alumnus who came back to the school and helped the girls basketball and volleyball programs become perennial powerhouses in this area.

Conner is a 1976 graduate of Everett Area High School and was a three-sport athlete as a Lady Warrior: volleyball, basketball, and softball. Her senior year, she helped the Everett volleyball team win the District 5 championship in the first year of that sport, while the basketball team was the District 5 runner-up.

She caught the coaching bug as a junior in high school when  she worked with a group of elementary players that went on to win its league championship.

"That sparked my interest in both coaching and winning," she commented.

Conner attended Slippery Rock University where she participated on the indoor and outdoor track teams. She finished fifth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in the high jump her junior year. She also served as a manager of the women s basketball team, where she commented that several duties she had would help her in her coaching experience.

After graduating in 1980 with a degree in Health, Physical Education, and Coaching, she was hired three months later to be a teacher at Everett. She was a varsity assistant girls basketball coach under Ken Grace, the head junior high volleyball coach, and the assistant track coach.

Conner became the head volleyball coach in 1985-86 and the head girls basketball coach just two years later. It took just three years in each sport for her to get the programs to the championship level as each captured District 5 titles in the third year.

The basketball program flourished under Conner to the tune of 11 District 5 finals including eight titles as well as 10 league titles. She was named the Bedford County League "Coach of the Year" and had an overall record of 327-147 in her 18 years. She has coached all the 1,000-point scorers in Everett girls history, including Krista Jay, who played Division I basketball for George Mason University.

Conner took a break from coaching volleyball after her first District 5 title in the 1987-88 season, but she returned in the 1991-92 season. She has been almost as successful with the volleyball team, accumulating seven District 5 finals with five titles. Her teams have captured a regional title to go along with the 10 league titles. Her overall coaching record is 332-147.

Possibly, the most amazing point is that she has coached for 18 years in each sport and has only two losing seasons in each sport. She is also one of the few coaches who has accumulated more than 300 wins in more than one sport.  As a track coach, she has helped girls win state medals in the 1600 relay and 3200 relay (twice).

She is also serving as an assistant athletic director at Everett.

Conner has made coaching a family event as she, and her husband Mike, coached basketball together for 15 years and coached their daughters, Jessica and Samantha. Jessica is a teacher at the South Middleton School District and helped as an assistant track coach and a volunteer volleyball coach.
