The 1973-74 and 1974-75 teams are the 9th and 10th undefeated wrestling teams since wrestling started at
Bedford in 1937 under Coach “Whitey” Koontz.
The previous undefeated teams were 1949 (8-0), 1955 (9-0), 1956 (9-0-1), 1961 (9-0), 1962 (9-0), 1967 (10-0) and 1968 (10-0).
In 1973, Bedford lost to Johnstown in the 8th meet of the year 29-17 and then won the last 4 meets. The 1974 team went undefeated (11-0) and the 1975 team also won them all (12-0). This raised the undefeated streak to 27. The 1976 team won the first 8 matches before losing to Lock Haven 25-22. This brought the new winning streak to a new longest of 35.
The Bedford County Sports Hall of Fame will induct this year, 2022, the 1974 and the 1975 teams into the Hall of Fame. The 1974 team was coached by Ed Clark, who retired after the 1974 season with a career record of 149-24-1. Ed also won 10 District 5 team championships. The 1975 team was coached by first year coach Bill Creps, who was Ed’s assistant for 8 years.
Former Coach “Whitey” Koontz was inducted into the Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1974.
