Hyndman’s Bedford County Sports Hall of Fame tennis coach Janet Philips once understatingly remarked after her 10th year of mentoring her Hornet netters that “The tennis teams here in Hyndman have built a tradition of winning. It gives our players confidence, but it’s tough living up to it.”

That tradition of winning led to winning the Bedford County League title 10 of 11 years and her players did continue to “live up to it.”
Her tennis dynasty got rolling in 1976 with stalwarts like Tracy Bryant (daughter of BCSHOF member ‘Rock’ Bryant), Susie and Sandy Cook, Lise Close, Tina Fochtman, Deanna Emerick, and Diane Corley, and they kept piling up victories from there.

When asked to narrow down her best of so many great championship teams, Coach Phillips made some suggestions, and the BCSHOF Committee agreed upon two teams in particular: the 1982 and 1984 teams.

The 1982 Lady Hornet tennis team actually qualified 6 netters for the PIAA state tournament, which was held at Harrisburg Community College. This was an unprecedented feat as all 6 of the representatives from District 5 at the state tournament were Hyndman Lady Hornets.
Members of that team included Debbie Jamison, Jackie Shaffer, Janet Campbell, Mary Ann Cunningham, Dawn Ringler, Brenda Mowry, Diane Campbell, Jill Diehl, Kim Campbell, and Cindy Hyde.

The 1984 team, which was Phillips’ youngest ever, went 12-0 on the season, including running off 46 straight victories in matches in the Bedford County League over four straight years.

The 1984 team also won the prestigious State College Tournament, defeating schools that were much bigger than Hyndman.
Included in the 1984 team is freshman April Phillips, who won here opening match at states and continued her illustrious tennis career by achieving All-American status in college as well as being inducted into the

Bedford County Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.
Other members of the 1984 team include Michelle Bistline, Thea Pensyl, Karen Shaffer, Beth Scritchfield, Cathy Jennings, and Cindy Hyde, who was also on the 1982 squad.

Highlighting this impressive litany of the Hyndman Hornet “Tennis Dynasty” is the fact that the Bedford County Sports Hall of Fame including three Hornet netters with coach Janet Phillips, her daughter April
Phillips, and Julie Willison, who are all a great source of pride for that little school in southern Bedford County.
