Class of 2013
        Bruce Fisher

Bruce Fisher, the legendary coach at Bedford during the 1940’s, set unmatched standards in football and basketball. His teams at Ferndale had done very well, and at Bedford, the results were even better.

The high point at Bedford was the 1945 football team, which won all ten of its games, outscoring opponents 329 to 6. The only touchdown against Bedford that season was posted by Ferndale, the team he had previously coached.

Coach Fisher’s football teams at Ferndale had won 26 straight games in the early 1930’s, and in four seasons in the late 1930’s had lost only four games.

His first football team at Bedford, in 1944, had posted a 6-2-1 record. In the 1945 season, as World War II was ending, coach Fisher had 11 lettermen, and over 70 boys on the roster. In those days boys had to find rides home after practice. There were no buses for them.

The undefeated 1945 team did not allow an opponent to score until the 8th game. In the rain, at Ferndale, a fumble by Bedford allowed the home team to get over the goal line in the first half. Bedford rallied for two touchdowns in the second half.

It would be 34 years before another Bedford team would go undefeated.

His coaching record in football at Bedford was 36-7-4

In basketball, he coached Bedford to its first District V Championship in 1945-46 and an overall record of
81-22

Fisher left Bedford soon after the peak season to become football coach at Penn Hills, a new suburban Pittsburgh jointure. He coached for several seasons, and became athletic director.

Bruce Fisher, a native of southeastern Bedford County who graduated from a one-room school in Robinsville, played college football at both Millersville and Juniata.

He received All-America Honorable Mention in 1924, while playing at Juniata.

He also played basketball at both Millersville and Juniata, and baseball at both, as well as playing six years of independent ball.

He noted taking coaching courses under famous coaches Jones, Stagg, Sutherland, Stuhldreher, Beirman, Anderson, Crisler, Holcomb and others. He also designed equipment improvements that manufacturers adopted.

Fisher retired from Penn Hills in 1964 and moved back to his home in the Clearville area.
