Walter Reed

  Wrestling has been a key in the life of Walter Reed, a graduate of Everett and long-time wrestling official in Maryland.

   He was born in Bedford on December 21, 1946. He graduated from Everett Southern High School in 1964 and wrestled in the 133-pound weight class for coach Robert Clark from 1961-64. He was the district champion in 1964 at the tournament held in Hollidaysburg. Coach Clark was a powerful influence in Reed’s life, a person that Reed admired and respected.

   Following high school, Walter joined the United States Marine Corps and served on active duty from 1964-68. He is a Vietnam Veteran and earned prestigious awards during this time. Following active duty, he served in the Marine Corps Active Reserves until 1971. Walter boxed for the Marine Corps and turned pro in Baltimore for two years while competing at Steel Workers Hall in Dundalk.

   After being honorably discharged, he joined the Baltimore City Police Department until 1975 when he started his own business, Reed’s Pest Control, which has been a successful business for him and his family.

   Walter returned to the sport of wrestling in 1969 as an official, when he joined the Maryland Scholastic Association, which later became the part of the Maryland Wrestling Officials Association in 1971. He officiated for 35 years and is highly recognized as one of the best officials in Maryland. He has been selected to officiate the MPSSAA State Tournament 11 times and the MIAA Independent School Tournament three times. Walter was recognized with the MPSSAA Service Award in 2001, and he later received the Maryland Wrestling Officials Association Award for his outstanding achievement in the sport of wrestling.

   He was a volunteer assistant coach at Walbrook High School from 1972-78, an assistant coach with Carver Vo-Tech from 1980-84, and head coach at Forest Park High School from 1990-92, where he had his first MSA champion.

   Walter was inducted as a member of the United States Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Oklahoma, in 2004.

   He is the father of two children and 14 grandchildren as well as two step-daughters. His daughter, Denise Michelle, is a graduate of Baltimore Polytechnic, Coppin State College, and the University of Maryland. His son, Walter Reed Jr., was a four-time Maryland Scholastic wrestling champion, and in 1991, he won the National High School Tournament in Pittsburgh.
