Class of 2013
Dan Kerr

Dan Kerr was a basketball star for Bedford High School and then went to College of Steubenville in Ohio. He was one of the key reasons why both programs had winning seasons when he was there.

Dan graduated from Bedford High School in 1957 where he lettered three years in basketball. He came out for basketball his freshman year, but played only on the junior varsity team. This was first year for Robert "Smoke" Andrews as coach at Bedford.

Along with Dan's hard work, Coach Andrews helped develop Dan into a very good defensive and offensive player. As a sophomore he started on the varsity and scored 264 points (12.6 points per game), and as a junior, he scored 235 points (16.8 ppg) despite missing five games with a foot injury.

Growing to a height of 6'4" for his senior year, Danny scored 470 points (23.5 ppg) to lead the county in scoring, and on defense Dan rarely allowed the opponent’s big man to score more then 10 points. His three-year total for scoring was 969, which was second all-time in the county until 1959.

Dan led Bedford to its first Bedford County Basketball League Championship and its second District 5 basketball title. The first came back in 1946.

His senior year, Dan scored 19 or more points in every regular season game including a school record 36 points against Everett. In another game, he grabbed 25 rebounds. Against Adams Township, Kerr scored 26 of Bedford’s 38 points in a 62-38 loss. In the interdistrict playoff game, Bedford led Altoona (23-2) 24-23 at halftime, but Altoona came back to win 54-34. Kerr scored 17 points, half of the total for Bedford in that game.

Dan was a member of the first-team All-Bedford County Basketball Team in 1956 and 1957. He was also a first-team member of Johnstown District All-Senior Cage Team and second-team to the Seventh Annual Johnstown-Tribune District Basketball All-Star High School Squad as a senior.

Dan received a four-year basketball scholarship to the College of Steubenville in Ohio.

Some of his highlights at Steubenville include:
* 1959-60 - Received the College of Steubenville Most Improved Player Award
* 1959-60 - Averaged 7.2 points per game and 8.2 rebounds per game
* 1960-61 - Averaged 4.8 points per game and 6.8 rebounds per game - helped lead team to the NAIA Tournament

In 1959 Dan played first base for the Snake Spring fast-pitch softball team that won the Independent Softball League playoff championship. Dan played basketball in the Army (1962-63) and helped his team win the Division Championship and second place in the Post Championship

Dan was a player/coach on the Highwaymen Basketball Team that was comprised of members of the State Police. The team played local high school teachers and others for community benefits including Wheelchair Basketball with patients at the Rehab Center in Johnstown. The team also played in the Bedford County Independent League for six years.

Dan met his wife Juanita in college, and they have been married for over 51 years and live in Bedford. They have two children, Mark and Lynn, along with two grandchildren. Dan still enjoys bowling in a weekly league that he has bowled in for over 40 years.
