Coach Dave Bailey spent 42 seasons at the helm of the Tussey Mountain High School boys basketball program. During
his tenure, his teams compiled an impressive 753-328 record. This overall win total is among the top five in the entire
state of Pennsylvania.
Coach Bailey grew up around the Pittsburgh area and is a 1962 graduate of West Green High School. He was awarded
a scholarship to play basketball at Waynesburg College where he graduated in 1969 with a teaching degree in special
education. Drafted into the Vietnam War, he spent 1966 and 1967 deployed as a medic. After coming home, he began
his coaching career with two years of assistant coaching at Fifth Avenue High School and one year at Westinghouse
High School. Dave was hired as the head coach at Tussey Mountain for the 1973-74 season.
Coach Bailey took over a struggling program in a small central Pennsylvania school district and turned it into a perennial
winner. Over 600 players have taken to the hardwood during his tenure with an impressive 17 1,000-point scorers
coached by Bailey.
The Titans qualified for the District 5 playoffs 36 times and played in the District 5 finals 21 times. Tussey Mountain won
nine District 5 titles during Coach Bailey’s career. This impressive District 5record translated into 21 PIAA state
qualifier teams and two teams made it to the Elite 8 in the entire state of Pennsylvania. This is impressive considering
the dominance of private schools that gathered talent from a wide area and usually dominate at the state level.
Opposing teams and coaches quickly realized not to take the Tussey Mountain Titans lightly, and soon a tenacious
reputation and flamboyant style was associated with Coach Bailey and his scrappy country basketball team.
Coach Bailey guided 20 different teams to 20-plus win seasons. On their home court, two amazing winning streaks
occurred. The first ran from 1998-2002 where Tussey did not lose for 42 consecutive games. The second run was from
2006-2011 where the Titans did not lose for an amazing 55 consecutive games. No coach or teams were treated kindly
on the home court in Saxton and the gymnasium was appropriately christened “The Terror Dome.”
To many sport fans, Dave Bailey is considered one of the best high school basketball coaches in the entire state of
Pennsylvania. The attention to detail and intensity of the Tussey Mountain program caused a significant rise in the level
of play for the Bedford County League and District 5 overall. Rivalries became established and continue to this day.
Coach Bailey also was a long time track and field coach and golf coach at Tussey Mountain. Dave is married and has 2
children and 2 step-children. In his retirement years, he enjoys golfing, all sports, and giving his advice to the boys
basketball program.
