Warren Landis

Despite Bedford not having a wrestling team, Bedford alumnus Warren C. Landis (whose nickname was Mooney) is the highest NCAA wrestling placewinner that has ever come out of Bedford County with a second place finish at 155 pounds back in 1933.
The East St. Clair Township native attended Virginia Military Institute (VMI) and was the Southern Conference champion in 1933, which earned him a trip to the National Championships at Lehigh University. He was a captain for the team that finished second in the Southern Conference. At nationals, he beat James Gleason from Syracuse and decisioned him. Landis was pinned by the eventual champion in Merrill Frevert of Iowa State. He came back to beat Tom Cunningham of Oklahoma A&M and Gus Kremer of Lehigh by decisions.
He was undefeated on the freshman wrestling team, having wrestled anywhere from 155 to unlimited. He lost only one match his sophomore year and two his junior year.
He was also a member of the VMI football teams in 1930 and 1931, and was on the freshman track team in 1930.
Landis was head coach at VMI for one year, leading the team to a 5-2 record and a second-place finish in the Southern Conference.
After graduating with a degree in electrical engineering, he became a lieutenant colonel in the Army, serving in the fuels and lubricants department. He later worked for the Shell Oil Company in Baltimore in the lubricants department
He was later inducted into the VMI Sports Hall of Fame in November of 1973.
He passed away on December 6, 1974, in Greensboro, N.C.
