Cary Grubb

A 1983 graduate of Bedford High School, Cary Grubb found success at nearly every level of baseball, helping teams reach new heights and having personal success as well.

Grubb was a three-year starter at Bedford High School, and he helped the Bisons capture three straight Bedford County League and District 5-AAA titles. The 1981 team featured four players that would later be drafted by major league teams: Grubb, Troy Ritchey, Mike Ickes, and Rob Doman, as well as several other players that went on to success in college.

Grubb was a Bedford County League All-Star his senior year and an honorable mention his junior year. In his final high school game, the Bisons lost a tough interdistrict playoff game to Beaver, 4-2. The pitcher in that game was a future Cy Young Award winner, John Burkett, and the Bobcats also featured a future major leaguer in Doug Piatt.

The tall third baseman decided to attend Clarion where he was a starter all four years. The Eagles won the PSAC West title in 1984 and were the runners-up in 1985. He was a PSAC West first-teamer in 1985, 1986, and 1987, and he had a stellar year in 1986.  He batted .426 with four home runs, four triples, six doubles, and 27 RBI, and Grubb was named the PSAC West Player of the Year.

Grubb is still among the career leaders at Clarion in several statistical categories. Those categories are: batting average (seventh at .343); slugging percentage (third at .564); on-base percentage (15th at .399); at-bats (19th with 312); runs scored (14th with 61); hits (16th with 107); triples (third with nine); home runs (third with 13); RBI (sixth with 68); and total bases (seventh with 176).

During the summer, Grubb played for the Bedford American Legion team in 1984, and he helped the Hurricanes to their first regional title and a trip to the state tournament at Boyertown.

The following two summers, Grubb travelled the mountain to Johnstown to play for Coke in the AAABA League. He found success there, helping the team to the national tournament twice. He was named the league MVP in 1985. The next season, the Coke team made a deep run at the national tournament, placing third. Grubb got a pleasant surprise as he was named the tournament MVP, one of only three Johnstown players to ever win the award. Grubb batted .500 with two home runs and 11 RBI in the tournament.

Following the 1987 college season, Grubb was drafted in the 19th round by the California Angels. He played a year for the Salem Angels in 1987 and for the Reno Silver Sox in 1988.

He split time between first and third base with both squads. He batted .252 with three home runs and 16 RBI with Salem, and .224 with 11 home runs and 69 RBI with Reno.

Grubb was inducted into the Clarion Sports Hall of Fame in 2013.

He lives in Schellsburg with his wife Molly and son Jay.
