Mark Dorner

Mark Dorner was a 1984 graduate of Bedford High School, who went on to have one of the most remarkable seasons in NCAA history while playing football at Juniata College.

Dorner was a three-year starter for the Bedford football team and a two-year starter in basketball. His senior year, the Bison football team went 9-1, falling only to Ligonier Valley.

He was an all-county performer in basketball, helping Bedford to a Bedford County League title. He averaged 18.6 points a game as the Bisons made a run at the District 6-AAA as a seventh seed. Bedford knocked off the second seed (Ligonier Valley) and third seed (Somerset) before falling in the district title game to Huntingdon.

Dorner, along with fellow 2015 Bedford County Sports Hall of Fame inductee Mike Cottle, decided to play football at Juniata College after graduating from Bedford.

The tall defensive back was a four-year starter for the Eagles at free safety, and he was named to the Middle
Atlantic Conference (MAC) first team as a junior in 1986.

His senior season is one of the more remarkable in NCAA history. The Eagles had a strong season, and Dorner intercepted 15 passes, which was an NCAA record for all divisions. It has since been tied, but not surpassed. Dorner caught many interceptions and also received many awards that year. He was a MAC first-teamer, MAC Most Valuable Player, Associated Press Little All-American, and a Kodak All-American College Division. He also received the Dr. J. Harold Engle Most Valuable Back award at Juniata College that year.

Dorner tried out for the New England Patriots and New York Giants after that season.

He was inducted into the Juniata College Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.

He and his wife Stacy live in State College. They have two sons, Shane and Brady. His son Shane was a player on the Lafayette College football team.
