Hyndman Baseball 1949
The 1949 Hyndman baseball team is this year’s Classic Team to be inducted into the Bedford County Sports Hall of Fame.
The 1949 team became the first Hyndman team to win the Bi-State Interscholastic League Championship. The Hornets had an exciting finish to culminate their championship season by beating the defending Bi-State champion with a 6-4 win.
That team was Fort Hill out of Cumberland, and it was considered one of the best in western Maryland, boasting great all-around athletes like Charlie Lattimer and Glen Burke. The victory over Fort Hill set up a playoff game for the title against Beall High School from Frostburg.
Beall had a powerful line-up and a much heralded pitcher named Lefty “Moose” Arnone. Taking the mound for Hyndman that day in early June of 1949 was Eddie Shaffer.
The Cumberland Times reported the following:
“Hyndman High is the new champion of the Bi-State Interscholastic Conference. The Pennsylvanians capped the title by defeating Beall High, 5-2, in a playoff fame at Frostburg State Teachers College field before about 700 fans.
“Clarence Ranker, who in six previous games had managed to fashion only a .100 batting average, provided the winning margin by cracking a two-run triple in the bottom of the seventh, breaking a 2-2 deadlock.
“Ed Shaffer went the distance for Hyndman for the win, while Lefty Arnone was charged with the set-back. It was Hyndman’s first championship team in the history of the conference, and the succeeded Fort Hill as the champion of the circuit.”
