    Is the 1930 Bedford Track & Field Team the best team in the history of Bedford sports? A good case could be made for them after looking at the results of the 1930 District 5 Meet and the PIAA State Meet.

State Meet at Altoona on May 17, 1930

John “Boots” Clark set new state records.  In the 100, his time of 10.0 broke the old record of 10.2. In the 220, his time of 21.1 broke the old record of 22.4. Clark broke the old records of Williamsport’s Joe Fenstermiller who he beat in the finals.
    The second place finish in the State Meet is the highest place finish of any Bedford team in PIAA history.

District 5 Track Meet continued

Each school could enter two athletes in the 10 individual events and one team in the mile relay. Bedford won 10 of the 11 events (losing only the discus), and it placed second in eight events and third in two others. Bedford placed 20 of its 21 entries in the top three, and only in the discus did Bedford fail to place both entries. Bedford placed only third in the discus with Brown, who went on to place fifth in the state meet the following week. 

Bedford County Meet

    The eighth annual Bedford County Meet was held at Bedford with seven Bedford County high schools including Saxton, Replogle, Hyndman, East St. Clair, Broad Top, Woodbury and Bedford. PIAA rules and regulations were followed, competent officials were employed and each event was scored on the 5-3-1 point basis.
    Bedford scored 58 points to win the meet followed by Saxton 31, Broad Top 16, Replogle 13, Hyndman 8, and East St. Clair 0.

    The Altoona track & field squad met a startling defeat on Saturday, May 3, 1930, in the dual meet with the Bedford track & field team. Bedford walked over the home team to the extent of 58-40. The event was held on the new Mansion Park Track which was in perfect condition.
