Janet Phillips
Class of 2014
Janet Phillips was a hometown girl who helped build the Hyndman High School girls tennis into one of the biggest dynasties in local sports history.

After graduating from Hyndman Junior Senior High School in 1965, Janet attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania earning a B.S. degree in English, and she returned to teach and coach at her alma mater.

Phillips was the girls basketball coach from 1973 until 1976, and that same year, saw the advent of an amazingly successful tenure as the Hornets’ tennis coach.

In only her second season coaching the girls’ tennis team, her Lady Hornets took home both the Bedford County League (BCL) and District 5 championships. At the conclusion of the 1982-83 season, Phillips’ teams had gone undefeated in Bedford County for the fifth consecutive year, tabulating 40 BCL wins in a row. The Lady Hornets’ also captured their fifth District 5 title that season.

In 1983-84, the Lady Hornets became the first Bedford County team to finish the season undefeated, and they were also the youngest team to do so. Not only did this talented group of tennis players go undefeated in the county, they overcame all odds by defeating the likes of Hollidaysburg, Bishop Guilfoyle, and Central.

By the end of the 1986-87 boys and girls tennis campaigns, her girls team won its ninth consecutive BCL championship, amassing a 60-game winning streak in the BCL.

When Janet Phillips stepped down as Hyndman’s tennis coach, her career record with the girls teams stood at an “eye-popping” 133-12-1 with a record of 102-6 in the BCL.

Coach Phillips’ career had so many highlights, that they cannot all be mentioned here. However, Hyndman’s 1984 Lady Hornet team competed for the first time ever in a two-day tournament, finishing in a tie for first place with State College High School, well ahead of the third and fourth place teams in that prestigious tournament.

Her teams produced a record number of individual BCL and District 5 champions as well as numerous state qualifiers over the years, without a doubt, setting an extremely high bar for every high school tennis program in Bedford County, District 5, and beyond.
