Gary Waugerman

Gary graduated from Bedford High School in 1963 where he
lettered in baseball, football, and basketball. After graduating, Gary went on to play baseball at Potomac State University and then at West Virginia University where he earned a bachelor degree in physical education and health in 1967.
In 1969, Gary returned to his alma mater to teach physical
education and health. Upon his hiring, Gary was appointed as the head baseball coach, a position he held for the next 33 years (1970-2002).
Over those 33 years he also coached Bedford American Legion baseball teams and was an assistant football and basketball coach at Bedford.
In his 33 years as head skipper, Waugerman amassed a record of  358-210 for a .630 winning percentage. He coached over 400 baseball players, of which 41 went on to play college baseball. There were seven players drafted by Major League Baseball teams, including Keith Williams, who played for San Francisco Giants.
After not winning any county championships in his first seven
years, the teams then won 15 Bedford County League Titles, with over half of them during the last 10 years. During Waugerman’s reign, Bedford  won nine District 5 titles (despite playing several season in District 6). His 1977 and 1984 teams made it to the state quarterfinals.
After handing the head coach reigns over to his assistant and son Scott, Gary continued to be an assistant coach until his health would not permit him. March 2013 was the first time in 43 years that Gary missed Bedford baseball’s opening day practice.
Gary also had a great love of the outdoors and taught the Hunter Safety Courses for over 30 years with the Pennsylvania Game Commission. During those 30-plus years, Gary won the State Instructor of the Year Award several times. After retiring from teaching, Gary established the Waugerman Deer Farm, which he owned and ran until his passing.
From high school into the late 70’s, Gary played baseball for
Hyndman in the Pen-Mar Semipro League. He also played softball for Bob Foor Cars in the Independent League and Schellsburg Fast-Pitch Softball League.
Coach Waugerman always gave credit where credit is due - his assistant coaches. Gary admitted that his success as a coach was a great tribute to his wonderful assistants, not just him.
Teaching and coaching young men to grow to be a successful
part of the community was more rewarding to Gary than the numbers and statistics they achieved on the baseball diamond.
Gary and his wife Susie had three children: Scott, Steve, and
Marcy. He also had three grandchildren: Reece, Kaden, and Kendal.
Gary passed away in 2015.
