Mike Felix

From the gridiron to the hardwood to the diamond, Mike Felix was an outstanding multi-sport athlete. In 1991, Felix graduated from Chestnut Ridge where he excelled as a student and an athlete. His name can still be found in school record books for all three sports. Felix also was a three-year letterwinner in each sport and named All-Bedford County in football, basketball, and baseball as a senior.
A heavily-recruited athlete out of high school, Felix chose to take his talents to Division II Mansfield University to play baseball for the Mountaineers.  As a freshman at Mansfield, Felix earned multiple conference “Player of the Week” honors. He was also named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) “Rookie of the Year” in 1992. During that season, he helped guide the Mountaineers to the PSAC conference championship, which qualified Mansfield for the Regional Tournament. Felix was named to the conference All-Tournament Team.
The 1992 Mansfield team advanced from the Atlantic Regional Tournament to the NCAA Division II World Series. Felix would serve a vital role throughout the postseason run. He served as the team’s designated hitter, batting sixth in the lineup.  That team would feature four All-Americans and three future Major League Baseball draft picks.
At the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament the Mountaineers knocked off Longwood University in the opening game. Future Major League player Michael Tucker was an outfielder on that team. Days later, Mansfield would defeat the Red Raiders of Shippensburg to advance to the NCAA II World Series tournament.
In the opening game of the World Series tournament, Mansfield beat Livingston University, 4-1. Three days later, the Mountaineers would stun the top-ranked team in the nation, Cal-Poly State, 11-8. Mansfield fell to Cal-Poly State 9-3 in the third game of pool play, setting up a showdown with Cal-Poly to advance to the national title game. Mansfield ousted Cal-Poly 3-2 to advance to the National Championship against Tampa University.
The Mountaineers fell to Tampa University 9-7 and had a chance to win in their last at-bat. A fly ball was caught at the warning track with the go-ahead run at the plate. Mansfield finished ranked second in the nation. They were ranked first in the nation in fielding and second in the nation in batting (.379) while finishing the season 40-12. The Mountaineers are the last Northern school to play for a National Championship. Felix batted .350 (7 for 20) in the World Series, which was held in Montgomery, Alabama, at Paterson Field.
Felix underwent shoulder surgery and was redshirted his sophomore year. He later transferred to Shippensburg at the start of his junior year and finished out his career with the Red Raiders. He would achieve personal highlights in his career as he remained a threat at the plate, compiling a .318 average and named to the PSAC All-Conference Team.
Felix graduated from Shippensburg in 1996 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Geo-Environmental Studies and is employed by Bedford County Conservation District. He and his wife Deborah live in Alum Bank, where they have two children, Samantha and Shane.
