1963 Bedford Baseball Team
The Bedford 1963 baseball team has gone down as one of the top baseball team in the history of the school.
It came at a time when the only games played were the Bedford County League games and the Bisons went 10-0. There was not a postseason at the time.
The Bisons started the year against Everett, and the teams tied, 6-6, and the team would play Everett twice later in the year. John Zembower, Bob Fisher, and Ron Holler each had two hits, while Terry Diehl, Phil Ely, and Greg McKinley were the pitchers.
The Bisons picked up their official first win with a 7-4 victory.
They improved to 3-0 with an 8-4 victory over Hyndman. The Bisons pounded out 11 hits with eight players getting at least one hit. Ed May, Bill Wise, and Fisher each had two hits with Fisher getting the win on the mound.
McKinley had a complete-game victory in a 9-4 road win over Northern Bedford including five strikeouts. Bedford had 12 hits. Wise, Kenny Baker, Gary Washington, and McKinley each had two hits.
The Bisons had one of their biggest offensive explosions with a 16-2 win over Chestnut Ridge in five innings. Diehl pitched the first four innings and struck out four. Bedford had 11 hits with Fisher and May connecting for three hits, while Gary Waugerman added two hits and scored four runs.
The Bisons took on defending league champion Everett in back-to-back games. The Bisons had two impressive wins, 9-1 and 8-4. In the first game, Bedford had 15 hits in the 9-1 win. May, Fisher, and Wise each had three hits, while Holler had two hits. McKinley and Fisher pitched for the Bisons.
In the 8-4 win, May and Washington had two hits, while Fisher got the win on the mound.
Bedford had another 16-run game in a 16-5 victory over Hyndman. McKinley got the win and he was backed by a 12-hit attack. Waugerman had three hits and three runs, while May had two hits. Nine different players had hits, and 11 different players scored a run.
The Bisons took on Northern Bedford, and the teams were tied, 4-4, with Gary Washington pounding a two-run home run in the seventh inning to lift the Bisons past the Black Panthers, 6-4. Baker and Washington each had two hits.
Bedford clinched at least a tie for the BCL title with a 12-1 win over Chestnut Ridge.
The Bison earned the BCL outright by blanking Tussey Mountain, 4-0, in the season finale. McKinley threw a three-hit shutout, and he was helped by Waugerman, Baker, and Steve Dudash, who all had two hits.
The team scored at least four runs in every game and scored six of more runs in nine of the 10 games. The pitchers and defense held opponents to 2.9 runs per game.
