1985-85 Bedford Girls Basketball Team
The 1984-85 Bedford girls’ basketball team is considered one of the top teams in Bedford girls’ basketball history.
The Lady Bisons went undefeated in a strong Bedford County League and captured the District 5-3A championship as they were coached by Amy Ray and assistant coach Bill Benigni.
Bedford topped District 7’s Swissvale, 59-41, before they were eliminated in the second round of states by District 6 champion Bishop Guilfoyle, 59-39.
The Lady Bisons were led by a senior group including Missy Raab, who went on to star at Mount Aloysius and St. Francis. She scored her 1,000th point in a win against Chestnut Ridge in mid-January. The other starters were Teresa Leach, Tracy Conner, and Sue Falvey, as well as junior Lexie Chamberlain.
The Lady Bisons jumped out and won the first 18 games. They had some impressive wins including victories over all the Bedford County League teams, Bellwood-Antis, McConnellsburg, and Williamsburg.
The Lady Bisons had their first loss of the year in a 55-46 loss to McConnellsburg.
Bedford loaded the end of their schedule with some tough opponents to get them prepared for the postseason.
They topped Somerset, but the Lady Bisons lost a heartbreaker in overtime to Hollidaysburg, 56-54, before ended the regular season with a victory against District 5 powerhouse Conemaugh Township, 57-46.
Bedford took on the District 7 sixth-place team in Swissvale, and the Lady Bisons rolled to a 59-41 victory in the first round of the PIAA playoffs in class 3A.
The next game came against Bishop Guilfoyle, and early foul trouble against Raab, led to the Lady Marauders grabbing a 59-39 win.
The Lady Bisons ended the year with a 21-3 record, as well as District 5-3A and Bedford County League titles.
Raab won her second consecutive BCL scoring title, averaging 18.1 points per game, and she was three-time BCL First-Team All-Star. Joining her on the BCL First-Team was Chamberlain, who averaged 10.0 points per game, and was second on the team in scoring and rebounding behind Raab.
Leach and Falvey averaged 9.5 and 8.8 points, respectively, for the Lady Bisons and were BCL Second-Team All-Stars, while Conner was BCL Honorable Mention, averaging 5.9 points.
Leach played basketball at Lebanon Valley, while Falvey was a walk-on at Pitt.
The Lady Bisons had some depth on the team with junior Bernie Imgrund (4.5 points) and sophomore Barb Falvey.
The other team members were Dawn Hiller, Lisa Ferguson, Tracy Kendall, Dara Pejack, Chris Schisler, and manager Kelly Baker.
