Terry Diehl

Terry Diehl
Terry M. Diehl’s life is a testament to the power of sports to shape character, build community, and create a sense of belonging. A 1963 graduate of Bedford High School, Terry distinguished himself early as a three-sport athlete, serving as a starting quarterback, wrestler, and pitcher on the 1963 undefeated baseball team.
He continued his athletic and academic journey at Frostburg State College, earning a B.S. in Social Studies in 1967 and a Master’s in Education in 1972. While competing in wrestling and baseball, he also helped found Alpha Delta Chi fraternity. His senior year included a memorable trip to Grambling University for the NAIA Regional Series, an experience that broadened his perspective on teamwork, respect, and inclusion.
Terry began his career in education and coaching in 1967, dedicating himself to developing young athletes both on and off the field. From 1972 to 1981, he coached junior high and JV football and wrestling and served as an assistant track coach, all while inspiring students to value discipline, teamwork, and integrity. He also served as Head Teacher at Snake Spring Elementary School from 1976 to 1978.
In 1979, Terry moved into athletic administration as Assistant Athletic Director at Bedford High School, and in 1981 became Athletic Director, a role he held for over two decades until stepping down in 2003. During his tenure, he expanded opportunities for student-athletes by helping to establish boys’ and girls’ soccer programs, as well as junior high softball and baseball. In 1988, he played a key role in the creation of football playoffs in Pennsylvania, ensuring broader opportunities for competition and recognition. His leadership was recognized in 1997 when he was named Pennsylvania Athletic Director of the Year for Region 3. He retired from education in 2005.
Beyond Bedford High School, Terry’s influence extended across the region and state. He served as Executive Athletic Director of the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference and held numerous leadership roles with the PIAA, including Wrestling Director for District V and the Southwest AA Region. A dedicated official for 36 years, he officiated multiple state championship finals in both wrestling and baseball and mentored generations of officials. He also helped establish the Fort Bedford Chapter of Baseball Umpires and the Bedford County Wrestling Officials Chapter.
Terry’s commitment to athletics spans more than 70 years as a player, coach, administrator, official, and mentor. He is also a founding member of the Bedford County Sports Hall of Fame, continuing to give back to the community that shaped him.
At the heart of Terry’s life is his family and his faith. He was married for 55 years to his high school sweetheart, Ellen, and is the proud father of Megan and Collyn, and grandfather to Eliot, Juliette, and Natalie. A devoted member of St. James Episcopal Church, Terry lives by the values he has long taught, believing that love conquers all and consistently leading with love and compassion, doing the right thing, acting with integrity, and creating space for everyone to belong.
Terry Diehl’s legacy is not only found in wins and accomplishments, but in the lives he has touched, the opportunities he created, and the enduring belief that sports can ---bring out the very best in all of us.
