John Black
John Black had a highly successful basketball coaching career at Chestnut Ridge and Bedford.
Black is a 1969 graduate of Bedford High School, and was a 3-sports athlete, participating football, basketball, and baseball.
He took his basketball talents to Shippensburg State College, where he got his teaching degree.
Black was a teacher and coach at Chestnut Ridge. With the boys’ and girls’ basketball seasons in different times of the year, Black coached both teams for many years.
He helped the Chestnut Ridge girls’ team to their first winning season in school history as well as 4 District 5 titles in 1979-80 (Class 2A), 1980-81 (Class A), 1982-83 (Class 2A), and 1983-84 (Class 2A). He also coached Chestnut Ridge to the school’s first boys’ basketball District 5 titles in 1979 and 1980, both in Class 2A.
When the girls and the boys both played in the winter of 1985, he became just the boys’ coach.
He moved from Chestnut Ridge to Bedford, and he coached 2 District 5 runners-up for the Bisons.
He ended his almost 30-year coaching career with over 400 combined wins, making him the third-winningest basketball coach in Bedford County history.
Black stepped down from coaching and was the athletic director for the Bisons for 10 years.
After retiring, he came to back to coach softball at Bedford for several years.
John is married to his long-time supportive wife Jane.  They have three children, J.T., Jeff and Joe.  John and Jane also have 6 grandchildren: Paige, Johnny, Jolene, J.J. and Joby.
With over 400 varsity basketball wins, John will be remembered as one of the winningest coaches in Bedford County history as well as being a loving parent and grandparent.
